At Gordon Reid Plumbing, we want your heating system to run as efficiently and reliably as possible. Here are some easy things you can do at home to stay warm, save energy, and avoid costly breakdowns.
If the tops of your radiators feel cooler than the bottom, you may have air trapped in the system. Bleeding your radiators releases this air and helps your system heat up more evenly and efficiently.
Tip: Use a radiator key and a towel, and always bleed the radiators with the heating off.
Most boilers work best when the pressure is between 1 and 1.5 bar. If it’s too low, your system won’t heat properly.
Tip: You can usually top it up yourself using the filling loop under the boiler ,but check your manual or call us if you’re unsure.
Blocking radiators with furniture or long curtains stops heat from circulating properly.
Tip: Make sure there’s space around your radiators to let the warm air move freely around the room.
Using your heating controls properly means your home is warm when you need it, without wasting energy.
Tip: Don’t switch a heat pump off completely during cold spells, it can take hours to reheat the home. Instead, let it maintain a stable base temperature and adjust up slightly when you're in.
If your system takes a long time to heat or the radiators are still cold after bleeding, there might be sludge in the pipework.
Tip: We can install a magnetic filter to catch sludge, or carry out a power flush to get things running like new again.
In central heating systems, sludge build-up from rust and dirt can cause cold spots and damage components in your boiler or ASHP.
Tip:
We can add a chemical inhibitor to the system, this slows down corrosion and keeps water flowing properly. Most modern installs include this as standard, but it should be checked every few years, especially if the system has been draind.
